Dr. Frye’s New Book Is Now Available!

The Folate Fix:  Exploring the Role of Folate in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

This book explores the extraordinary role of folate in the body. While folate may not be a magic cure-all, its vital importance for essential bodily functions makes it nothing short of miraculous for those who lack it. Although folate deficiency was first identified over a century ago, recent medical advancements have revealed that this deficiency can be localized to the brain-a condition known as cerebral folate deficiency (CFD).

CFD is a serious yet often overlooked syndrome that can lead to neurodevelopmental and psychiatric symptoms, including epilepsy. Most notably, CFD has been linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a condition affecting an increasing number of children worldwide. Many children with ASD may have unrecognized, yet treatable, folate abnormalities. Fortunately, CFD is treatable with leucovorin-a safe and effective form of folate, also known as folinic acid (distinct from folic acid). Leucovorin can cross into the central nervous system, correcting folate deficiency in the brain and significantly alleviating symptoms. This treatment offers new hope for individuals with CFD and ASD.

This book serves as both an informative guide and a practical resource for understanding and addressing folate abnormalities. It features inspiring stories from parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders who have witnessed remarkable improvements with CFD treatment. Additionally, it provides clinicians and caregivers with essential tools, including evaluation strategies, treatment best practices, and answers to frequently asked questions. By shedding light on this well-tolerated, life-changing treatment, this book aims to empower families and healthcare professionals alike-offering hope, healing, and a path toward better outcomes for those affected by folate-related disorders.

Dr. Frye – A Behavioral Child Neurologist

Specializing in Precision Personalized Care of Children with Autism and other Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Personal Statement

As a child neurologist, it became clear to me that there was a general lack of understanding with regards to the causes and treatments of neurodevelopmental disabilities. Because of this, I pursued specific training after I finished my child neurology and pediatric residencies and completed two fellowships, one in Behavioral Neurology and Learning Disabilities and other one in Psychology.

During this time I was struck by the parents who wished to better understand the cause of their child’s disorder and to pursue effective treatments for their children. Most parents were told that there were no medical treatments for children to correct their underlying medical condition. But these parents did not accept such answers.

As I learned more, I found that there were many causes of neurodevelopmental disabilities. Thus, I started to take a close look at medical abnormalities that could be treated. Amazingly I found that some children actually started to improve with simple, safe medical treatments.

Mission Statement

In my clinical practice, in my research, and through training and education, I have aimed to systematically diagnose and treat amenable causes of disability associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. The ability to improve the lives of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder drives my work forward.
